The premise

The road is the mystery.

The title is yellow brick road, stripped to its bones. The story unspools the same way — one clue, one brick at a time, laid down by someone who wants them to keep walking. Reese follows the road. Sloane knows better. She is usually right.

The clue-payoff map

The bricks, laid so far.

A brick is a clue — not an episode — laid by someone who wants them to keep walking. Episode 1 alone laid 2. The road keeps going; the far end always dissolves into fog.

Episode one arrives in August.

A new episode every month. Two Berkeley graduates take one last road trip before real life starts, and stop in a town at the end of a long county road. They should have kept driving.

Who's walking it

The cast.

Reese Gale — The Seeker
The SeekerReese Gale

Warm, curious, the one who insists on following the road. California money — to her it means freedom. Pulled forward by wonder, and narrating all of it.

“It started with a road. A long one, going somewhere nobody drives to on purpose.”

Sloane Whitlock — The Skeptic
The SkepticSloane Whitlock

Sharp, dry, analytical. Old East-Coast money and the obligation she's fleeing. Wants to turn back and never quite does. Usually right.

“We should keep driving. We're not going to keep driving, are we.”

Emmett Diggs — The Coffee Man
The Coffee ManEmmett Diggs

Runs the coffee shop at the edge of town. Kind, unassuming, remembers everyone's name. Knew Reese's before she gave it.

“There you are. Cold night for it. Come warm up before you drive. On the house.”

Ray Bissell — The Deputy
The DeputyRay Bissell

Halloway's entire police department, such as it is — one desk, one landline, one endlessly patient smile.

“Nobody goes missing in Halloway, miss. Hardly anybody left to go missing.”

Colleen Brannagh — The Innkeeper

Episode 3 — The Orpheum

She came over from Ireland young and meant only to pass through Halloway — forty years ago. Now she keeps every room made up and warm.

“Sure, you'll stay the night, pet. It's no bother at all — there's tea in it for you.”

Maya — The Welcomer

Episode 2 — Underneath

Dreamy, disarming, and entirely at home somewhere she never meant to stay. She takes to Reese immediately.

“You'll see.”

Halloway

Six days after graduation, Reese and Sloane drive eighteen miles off the map into Halloway — a town that is far too quiet, and far too clean. Sightseeing at the old cannery, they find a body on the rocks. The only thing on it is a black card printed with a single word: ylobrkrd. And in a world soaked through with fog, the card is bone dry.
